The West Side is a largely residential neighborhood with a history as an upper-lower to middle class neighborhood of blue collar families. The original residents of the neighborhood were predominantly Germanic, Irish and Norwegian. Over the past two decades, however, it has become the destination of choice for Central and South American immigrants; with the predictable effects on racial and class tensions. As property values have fallen, many of the neighborhood’s long time residents have fled, moving into more homogenous neighborhoods.
